My first night in Thailand!!
After 19 hours of travel, Ashley and I stepped out of the airport in Chiang Mai. What did we do first? Naturally, we headed straight to the night market for some cheap shopping and to test out our bartering skills.
It was extremely exciting and we had to stop ourselves from buying everything we saw, especially considering that we’d only been in the country for an hour. In hindsight, I wish I would have bought more there because the things you find in Chiang Mai markets are much different (and way cooler) than the stuff in Bangkok. If you’re into cute/artisan/crafty/souvenirs, then you will definitely want to do most of your shopping in Chiang Mai. In Bangkok you will mostly just be shopping for clothes, jewelry, accessories, and toys. Boring.
Beautiful examples of the handcrafted flowers and soaps sold in the marketplace!
One thing to definitely try is Mango Sticky Rice – a delicious favorite of the locals. It’s exactly what it sounds like. Chopped mangoes on top of rice, with a sweet glaze drizzled on top. Amazing.
A word of advice: Be careful in the marketplaces… you WILL get lost! They are huge and never-ending. But don’t worry, if your feet get tired, you can stop for a foot massage for only $2.50 🙂
